I've never had a problem with my son sleeping in his own room. In fact, he prefers his bed. My husband and I have always slept solo. It is hard when we travel though because he likes his bed. My issue is getting him to bed. My son is so active, he cries when we put him down. I think he feels there's a party going on when we put him down.

Hi, I've read that book too, but my daughter is niether a young baby or over 4 (able to understand) so that book didn't apply greatly, shes 2 1/2 now, but doesn't have her own room, she has been a really light sleeper, being fed to sleep untill 6 months, and moved house 3 times and country once, with a lot of upheaval. She gets herself to sleep most nights but wakes needing drinks at about 2am, I swear it because we wake her up somehow.

Anyway, I enjoyed looking on your blog!

My son had just turned 2 and I was laying down with him every night to go to bed. (really time consuming) I tried the sit by the bed technique and it didn't work, it was hell! He cried and got up every second it was very tiring to keep getting up so I gave up and figured he wasn't mature enough to understand yet. (we had also just moved to a new house) I waited a month or so for him to feel more at home and tried it again. Stayed in his room and moved closer to the door every day. It was like magic. It ended up working within 2 nights. So move forward a year and my son has regressed he keeps getting out of bed over and over and doesn't end up going to bed until 10:00! So I looked up what to do and found your article the second I told him I would get him a new truck if he stayed in bed and went to sleep for a week he stayed in bed and fell asleep within minutes! YAY!

This method sounds great, luckily I haven't had problems with my 3 kids getting to sleep on there own. But I really like what you have said, sounds like a reasonable and doable method to get your children to fall asleep on their own.

My son was sleeping in his own room since birth and we had no problems with him sleeping alone. The only problem he had was sleeping the whole night long. He use to cry until I came to his room. But after ignoring his cry for a 3-4 nights he stopped crying.

Hi,
I have been lucky with my childrens beds time routine. My eldest child used to have terrible night mares when he was about 4, but they went away as soon as they came.
Sleep bed time routine is so important i think. I have always stuck to them and have been lucky enough to have no problems.

Yvonne-I know how difficult that is-our 6 year old used to do that for a while!! I would get to tired to bring him back too. I had him come up with something HE really wanted and then used that as incentive, letting him know he needed to stay in his bed all night. Another thing I have done, which is a bit of a pain, but got my kids in a better sleep pattern, was I would go to their room when they woke, I wouldn't allow them to come to my bed and I would go to their room when they woke up. If your son is in a toddler bed then lay down next to him on the floor when he wakes up. If he is in a twin bed it's a little easier to just lay next to them when they wake up. I do that with my daughter who is 4 now. She mostly will sleep through the night now.

No trouble getting son aged 3.5 to go to bed but getting him to stay there all night is the problem!! He can climb over baby gate and I do not want to lock him in his room as that feels too much like making him a prisoner!! He just climbs in with us usually around 3 - 4 in the morning but fidgets around keeping us awake. Taking him back to his room just becomes repetitive. Any ideas ?? bribery does'nt work with him

I bought that book but have yet to really sit down and read through it. It seems that I must revisit it this time..since #2 is already 2yrs old and not sleeping through the night at all

I like this method. We are building a new house and when we get moved, I would love my daughter to begin sleeping in the room with her sisters, but I wasn't really sure how I would be able to pull it off. She will be a little over two by then, so I think your method might work.
