The Ocean Motion Bottle
This is an incredibly fun project!! I was inspired by my son’s teacher to post this one!! They do the coolest things in kindergarten!! When creating this project I would suggest reading a couple of books on the ocean first like Down in the Deep, Deep Ocean! by Joann Cleland or Oceans and Seas (Science Kids)
by Nichola Davies. Discuss with your child how there is a high tide and low tide in the ocean, how some things float in the ocean and some things sink. You can talk about how the kinds of creatures you saw in the books and where they live in the ocean. Then you can make the Ocean Motion Bottle and see how different objects move in the waves!
Supplies
- Clear Water/Soda Bottle label peeled off
- Blue and Green food coloring
- Glue
- Glitter
- Penny
- Foam fish or creature
- Other objects you want to see in bottle
Steps
- Clean out bottle
- Fill 3/4 of the way with water
- Add two drops of the food coloring-either one blue/one green or two of one color
- Add in the objects you want to see move in the water(don’t put in too many-3-4 should do it.
- Glue inside of Cap and twist on tight
- Move bottle back and forth a note how the different objects move.
Have fun!! You can have a lot of discussion with this one. This is particularly good for 4-7 year olds.
