One of my favorite Toddler Crafts is Play Dough!! Playing with Play Dough is really fun!! But when you make it yourself and get to make your own colors it’s even better!! It’s like to projects in one!! First you get to make the recipe and then you get to play with it!!
This recipe is really simple to make and has ingredients you would probably normally have handy in your house.
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Flour
- 1/2 Cup Salt
- 1 Cup Water
- 2 Teaspoons Cream of Tartar
- 1 Tablespoon Mazola Oil
Add Food Coloring 1 Drop of what ever color you would like, or mix the colors to create a special color!
Warm all ingredients in a pot on the stove on low, Stir until it gels and then you have your playdough!!
This can be used for months if kept in a sealed tupperware.

We cooked our first batch on the stove – what a mess! The second batch, we cooked in the the microwave, and it worked beautifully. For a single batch, I cooked it for one minute, stirred it with a rubber spatula, cooked it one more minute, then kneaded it with the rubber spatula. It was fast, easy and the play dough turned out smooth and even.
What a great idea! Thanks. I’ve printed this out and will be giving it a try over the holidays when the kids get bored of their presents and want to do a bit of “making”. It looks so easy to make too.
It’s a nice tip for junior at home to make them busy. Thanks

instead of cooking all ingredients…just mix them all together and use a cup of boiling water to bind them together.
we use to do this all the time as kids. I forgot how much fun this is. I also found some day of the dead activities that was fun and puts a twist on this (ie, mask making). Anyway, what i don’t get is how to ensure it stays solid. Ie, i remember my stuff use melt!
I like this play dough version. I have in the past made a cornstarch and baking soda dough that has a nice matte finish like unglazed china. My children and I made beautiful Christmas ornaments that have held up through the years. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Is cream of tartar used in anything but playdough
love this recipe perfect for keeping the children busy on a rainy week!! although had no idea what mazola oil was.. We made an extra big batch and took some to pre school
