Kids will have fun making animals out of ordinary materials which can be found at home. An example of this is the Potato Porcupine which your kids can easily do with your assistance.

The materials are commonly found in the kitchen, or bought in stores or groceries near you. They are not very expensive, so you can make several of this if you like. You can use different sizes of potato if you want to create, maybe, a family of porcupine. Each porcupine requires one potato only.

Materials needed:

  • Small potato (uncooked)
  • Craft sticks (or you can use popsicle sticks used for ice cream)
  • Two wiggle eyes
  • Toothpicks
  • Glue
  • Black marker

How to make it:

  1. Use a small uncooked potato for this project. Do not peel.
  2. Break the craft sticks into half, making sure that they are equal in length.
  3. Push two half sticks into the bottom of the potato for legs, and another two at the sides for arms.
  4. Glue the two wiggle eyes on the front of the potato. Draw a nose and a mouth using the black marker to complete the face of your porcupine.
  5. Stick the toothpicks around the potato to serve as pins of your porcupine.

Halloween Pumpkin Mask

Halloween is one of the most anticipated occasions among little children. The idea of knocking on the neighbor’s door for some “Trick or Treat” sounds very exciting for little kids.  And this requires them to wear their Halloween costumes.   It adds more fun and color to the celebration.  Halloween costumes, however, need not be very expensive. Parents can make these with their kids at home.  A very good example is a Halloween Pumpkin Mask which is easy and simple.

You can engage your children in making this to help them develop their creativity and ingenuity.  Always remember, assist your kid in using sharp and pointed materials to prevent them from cutting themselves.

Materials:

Large white paper plate
Black construction paper
Orange paint
Small paint brush
Glue
Pair of scissors
Rubber band

Pencil

How to do it:
  1. Paint the large white paper plate with orange on one side until it is completely covered. Set aside to dry.
  2. Once completely dry, draw two small triangles for the eyes. Cut them out to provide holes for the eyes.
  3. On a black construction paper, draw a small triangle for nose, and a shape of a mouth. Cut them out and glue them to complete the face of the mask.
  4. Punch a small hole on each side of the mask, just big enough for the rubber band to pass through. Tie the rubber band on each hole at the sides of the mask, and pull backward to place on each of your ear. Now you have a Halloween pumpkin mask.
